Training - The Engaging with Islam course

This is the training course for Engaging with Islam. You can do this course individually, as a church group, or as part of leadership training. Anyone can lead this course as no previous knowledge of Islam is required and leader's notes are provided. To run the course you need the DVD to show to the group, and a copy of the workbook for each participant.

There are seven sessions, and each is a mix of preparation, group discussion and a DVD presentation. The session notes are in the workbook. Each session takes between 60 to 70 minutes.

The course syllabus is as follows:

  • Session 1: The History of Islam
  • Session 2: The Books of Islam
  • Session 3: The Practices and Beliefs of Islam
  • Session 4: Test a Prophet
  • Session 5: Promoting Islam - Dawah
  • Session 6: Contend for the Faith

Further Training

If you have just completed the Engaging with Islam course you may be thinking about what to do next. Here are some suggestions:

1. Keep learning the Bible and growing as a Christian. We need to know about Islam but to know Jesus. There is no use being an expert in Islam and an infant in your own faith. There is plenty of Bible teaching on this site.

2. Talk to Muslims. Don't be afraid. Trust God and talk to them as you would anyone else. Most Muslims are quite reasonable and keen to discuss things.

3. Run this course with a group of people. When you teach something you learn more about it, so run this course and you will be even more familiar with the issues.

5. Get familiar with the Answering Islam website.

6. Just get involved. There are many ministries happening for Muslims. Find out where these are in your area and get involved.

7. Get a more training at I2 Ministries.

Jay Smith in Australia

Jay Smith recently visited Australia (April 2009) to do work on his PhD. Jay is involved in apolgetics and polemics with Islam. While he was in Australia he was invited to give the following lectures.

  • "The Qur'an and History" - Examines the formation of the Qur'an and its contents in the light of the latest historical research.
  • "The Hermeneutical Key" - Christians and Muslims use the same words but mean different things. Jay explains why this is case and shows how we can communicate effectively.
  • "The Biography of Muhammad" - An introduction to the biography of Muhammad and the historical questions around it.
  • "Understanding Radical Islam" - Who are these people, where do they get their authority from, why do they do it & what should be our response as Christians?
  • "Evangelising Muslims through the common questions they raise."

We need to use Jay's visit as an opportunity for us in Australia to learn and think about our own apologetics and polemics with Islam. How do we need to be doing this work? What training are we providing in this area? What issues do we need to be working on? These are some of the questions we hope that Jay's visit will stimulate us to think about.

The 3 DVD set of Jay's lectures with visual displays, question time plus an interview are available for purchase ($25).
